Following changes to the Alberta School Act, Francophone school boards retain the designation of mixed school boards, except for the Calgary area, which has a Francophone Catholic school board and a Public Francophone school board. By law, school boards must identify themselves as Catholic or Public.

A ministerial decree gives parents the right to elect school trustees to administer the Francophone schools. The first elected trustees for East Central are: Vital Ouellette, Guy Palin, Léo Piquette and Jacques Bellerive.

A decision of the Supreme Court (Mahé decision) confirmed that Francophones have the right to administer their children’s education.

Article 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms acknowledges that minority Francophone communities have the right to provide their children with a primary and secondary school education in French.
