Eligibility criteria

A student is eligible for francophone education in Aéberta if they meet at least one of the following criteria, as outlined in Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

1. A parent whose first language learned and still understood is that of the Francophone minority;
2. Parent who received primary school instruction in French in Canada;
3. The siblings of a child who received instruction at the primary or secondary level in French in Canada.

Exceptional Eligibility

(As per the CSCE Administrative Procedure 301 and 302)

Francophone Ancestry

• Canadian parents must be able to prove that they have a Canadian Francophone ancestor.
• The goal of this exception is to recover the Francophone generations who have been lost and assimilated since 1867, thus recognizing the “restorative element” of Article 23.

Immigration

1. Non-Canadian parents who reside in the province/territory and who speak French, or speak neither English nor French but choose to integrate the Francophone community, may also request admission for their children.
2. The purpose of this exception is to integrate non-Canadian citizens to the Francophone community, thereby ensuring the vitality of the community and its multicultural diversity within the linguistic duality.

Anglophone

1. Anglophone parents who choose to integrate the Francophone community may request admission for their children.

Preschool and Kindergarten Eligibility

Preschool : In addition to meeting the criteria listed above, your child must be 4 years old by December 31 of the current school year.

Maternelle : In addition to meeting the criteria listed above, your child must be 5 years old by December 31 of the current year.

Offered at select CSCE schools: Preschool (3 years old): In addition to meeting the criteria listed above, your child must be 3 years old as of December 31 of the current school year, be potty-trained, and be able to function well in a small group.
